Soft pinks and cool shadows stand against each other in beautiful contrast to construct the figure of a woman. Leaning back and bracing her weight with one arm, her form twists with the movement yet maintains an elegant grace. The dark background allows her pale skin to glow in contrast, further accentuated by Dixon’s carefully placed highlights. Although the woman’s face is turned away from the viewer, it is believed that this painting is a depiction of the artist’s wife, Edith Hamlin.
