Facing southwest, looking toward the monumental Temple Crag and overlooking the beautiful Third Lake, Payne uses his well-known rough technique to compose imposing cliffs and the small lake and draws the viewer’s attention to the artist’s sense of light and color. The long shadows and pink hue of the landscape suggest the warmth either of morning or early evening light.
